imo.im sponsored its first student hackathon - imo Hackathon@Northwestern - from Nov. 9-10 at Northwestern University alongside student group Hack Northwestern. Chicagoland students worked for 22 hours to build a collaborative application using imo’s API, and had the option to upload their apps onto imo to be used by its millions of users.
The hackathon brought in great apps, food and prizes! Thank you to all who participated, and to those who helped us put on a successful event!

In addition to the hackathon, imo also worked with Northwestern Greek chapters Kappa Alpha Theta and Zeta Beta Tau to help raise money for their charities: Leukemia Research Foundation, CASA and the Theta Foundation. The event featured pie throwing, fortune telling, face painting and more! imo brought in free Babycakes and imo-branded apparel to draw attendees to the event. imo also sponsored an iPad Mini giveaway to bring students to the event, where the winner was announced during the Carnival.
imo CEO Ralph Harik said imo.im intentionally decided to work with as many student groups as possible for its outreach efforts because interacting with different people is what imo.im is all about.
“Ultimately, imo is about helping users keep in touch with current friends and helping them make new ones,” Harik said. “Whether students bond over their mutual use of imo, the fact that they’re supporting a good cause or that they are staying awake through the night to build an application, we want imo to be part of those experiences for students.”
